Dog Care & Activities
General Care Guide
A dog should be treated as a member of the family
and given love, discipline and security. Ideally your dog should have
free access to a safe and secure garden. He should have a comfortable
bed in the kitchen where he will have company and feel part of the
family.
If you cannot, or do not wish to provide the free
run of the garden for your dog, or to keep your dog in the house, then
you should make a large enclosure with adequate space for the dog. Your
dog must have a comfortable draught-free kennel, with clean warm bedding
which will provide shelter from wind, rain and summer sun. This
enclosure should be situated near the house so that the dog can still
hear and, see people coming and going and feel part of the family.
Dogs are sociable animals and love the company of their owner and family
and that of other animals. It is cruel to isolate a dog at some distance
from the house without the company people or of another dog. Dogs need
attention and companionship.
Some dogs, if kept in an enclosure, will try to
climb and jump out and therefore you may need a roof to prevent this.
The roof should allow some sunlight through and can provide additional
shelter over the sleeping area to keep off rain, and provide shade from
the sun.
A dog must never be tied for any length of time,
as this is both cruel and unnatural. It is an offence to deprive a dog
of its freedom in this way. If you have to tie your dog for short
periods you should use a running-chain. This is a line between two
posts, as far apart as possible, and the line is then passed through the
loop of the dog's lead. This allows the dog to run up and down between
the posts.
All dogs enjoy a daily walk and it is unfair
never to take your dog out. Dogs need mental stimulation and a change of
scene. Try to find a little time to play with your dog too which can
also be a time for training. This again, provides necessary mental
stimulation. Bored dogs will often bark and annoy neighbours, or sink
into depression. We all have only one life and it is cruel to deprive
any animal of the opportunity to lead a normal happy life.
FRESH DRINKING WATER MUST ALWAYS BE AVAILABLE IN
A CONTAINER WHICH CANNOT BE KNOCKED OVER.
NEVER GIVE YOUR DOG CHICKEN BONES, OR ANY COOKED
BONES, WHICH CAN SPLINTER AND PIERCE THE INTESTINES. THESE ARE EXTREMELY
DANGEROUS.
Consult your Veterinary Surgeon about routine
vaccinations and other health matters.
